[Review] Truth or Dare brings terror to the party

Many of us have played the game Truth or Dare at one time or another.  Either at a sleepover, frat party, or wherever, it can certainly bring some interesting results.  The latest from Blumhouse, Truth or Dare, adds a horrific twist to this seemingly innocent and fun game.  What if the game was possessed and followed you around, forcing you to continue playing it when you did not want to anymore?  That’s what happens to Olivia and her friends in this movie.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this movie, despite the low ratings given by Rotten Tomatoes.  I thought it was well written and I enjoyed the twists along the way.  As we know from the trailers, Olivia (played brilliantly by Lucy Hale) and her friends are playing truth or dare with a stranger they just met and find out that he only brought them there cause he needed people that were expendable to the game.  They all return home, thinking they have left it all in Mexico, only to realize the game has followed them home and will use their worst fears against them.  They must figure out how to stop the game before it’s too late.

As for the cast, I thought Lucy Hale (Olivia) and Violett Beane (Markie) did amazing jobs and I enjoyed the back and forth that went on between these two characters.  I thought the Lucas character could’ve had more depth and the Tyson/Ronnie characters were just your typical D-bag characters in these type of movies.  The one character I just absolutely didn’t like was Penelope, the drunk among the group.  Of course with her alcohol abuse, it is eventually used against her.  I thought the writing team did a good job in taking a simple premise, like a game of truth or dare, and adding the horror/suspense element to it.  I was definitely on the edge of my seat for much of this movie, just anticipating what would come next.

All in all, I would absolutely, 100% recommend seeing this movie.  Do not go into it with the preconceived notion that this is supposed to be a fresh idea in horror, because it is reminiscent of the Final Destination movies.  Just enjoy the fun and suspense of it.  What do you think?  Leave a comment below.

SLASHER ZONE RATING:  5 out of 5 stars

If you don’t want to know what happens, please stop reading.  I absolutely loved the ending of this movie, and the twist that it provided, leaving it open for a possible sequel (they’ve already grossed $8.2 million off a $3.5 million budget).  In the end, Olivia and Markie (the only survivors) must figure out a way to beat the game, and the demon possessing it, before they both die.  Olivia, who runs a YouTube vlog, decides that they can’t beat it, but they can draw others into the game, much like the guy who drew her and her friends in.  She decides to post a YouTube video detailing everything about the game and how it works….then ends it by asking “Truth or Dare?”.  The movie shows people from all over watching it, which now brings them into the game.  I thought this was a great twist at the end, cause I really felt it was going to be a pure happy ending with the girls beating the demon and ending the game.  The fact that the game continues leaves the door open for a possible sequel.
